Tenerife Heatwave Subsides as AEMET Issues New Weather Warnings for Strong Winds and Rough Seas

CANARY ISLANDS – The Regional Government of the Canary Islands has officially stood down its high-temperature pre-alert for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura as the recent spell of unusually hot weather comes to an end. Updated forecasts from Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) confirmed a sufficient drop in temperatures to lift emergency measures under the island weather plan (PEFMA).

However, while temperatures return to seasonal norms, meteorologists warn that powerful trade winds and dangerous coastal conditions will affect much of the archipelago, with yellow weather alerts remaining active.

Wind Gusts Up to 80 km/h and Maritime Hazards

Yellow wind warnings have been issued for gusts reaching up to 70 km/h across low-lying southeast and northwest slopes of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, and southern Lanzarote. Conditions will be even more severe in La Gomera, where exposed areas could experience gusts exceeding 80 km/h.

A separate yellow coastal alert is in place for the eastern, southern, and western shores of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, along with La Gomera, El Hierro, and western La Palma. Northeasterly winds of 50 to 61 km/h (Force 7) will create rough seas and strong swell, particularly in the channels between islands. Caution is strongly advised along coastal paths and during water activities.

The end of the heatwave brings much more comfortable daytime conditions. Peak temperatures will hover around 29°C in Tenerife and Lanzarote, while overnight lows will settle between 19°C and 22°C. A minor layer of high-altitude airborne dust (calima) may affect eastern areas without causing significant disruption.

Cloud cover will be present along the northern slopes of the mountainous islands during the morning, bringing a small chance of localized light drizzle before clearing to brighter skies by early afternoon. Southern areas and higher ground are expected to remain predominantly sunny.
