SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE – In a major milestone for the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been officially selected as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2027 . Following a unanimous decision by a jury of tourism, hospitality, and culinary experts, the island’s capital won the national title over competing Spanish cities.
“Crossroads of Flavours”: A Campaign Designed as a Traditional Recipe Book
Santa Cruz presented its winning candidacy under the slogan “Santa Cruz de Tenerife, crossroads of flavours” . Breaking away from conventional technical reports, the city designed its strategy around the concept of a traditional recipe book, guiding judges through different courses of a meal to highlight local identity, heritage, and talent.
Across all four quarters of 2027, the capital will roll out an extensive schedule featuring over 130 planned culinary activities . The initiative will connect every tier of the local food ecosystem, including high-end restaurants, traditional taverns, municipal markets like the famous Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, local farmers, artisanal producers, and culinary training academies.
Showcasing Authentic Canarian Produce to Millions
Santa Cruz currently welcomes over 3.4 million visitors annually through hotel stays, day trips, and cruise ship arrivals. Local authorities aim to position regional food as a central pillar of the island’s brand, showcasing signature produce such as volcanic wines, artisanal goat cheeses, ancient local potatoes, fresh Atlantic seafood, and traditional mojos.
This marks the first time in the award's 15-year history that the title travels to Spain's Atlantic islands, taking the mantle from Jerez de la Frontera (Capital 2026).
