Tenerife’s Unique Plant Life Investigated for Future Medical and Scientific Discoveries

TENERIFE – Tenerife's extraordinary botanical diversity is at the center of a new scientific initiative. The Tenerife Cabildo and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), through the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA), have joined forces to create LiPNaT (Librería de Productos Naturales de Tenerife).

Building a Molecular Library of Canary Islands Flora

The LiPNaT project aims to isolate and document unique chemical compounds produced by endemic island plants as natural survival mechanisms against drought and environmental pressures. The resulting scientific library will serve as a valuable resource for future pharmaceutical and biotechnology developments.

€1.88 Million Joint Investment in Scientific Research

Backed by a combined resource allocation of €1.88 million — including €1.2 million committed by the Cabildo for 2027 and 2028 — the project funds specialist researchers, genomic sequencing, chemical purification, and controlled preservation of plant specimens.
