Historic Milestone in Los Cristianos: First Building Licences Approved for El Mojón Development

LOS CRISTIANOS – Arona Town Hall has officially issued the very first building licences for the long-awaited El Mojón urban plan in Los Cristianos, signaling the start of actual construction on one of the south of Tenerife’s most significant developments after nearly 30 years in the planning process.

Originally approved in 1996, the infrastructure phase of the plan reached a major milestone in September 2025 when the majority of public works were formally handed over to the municipality, with only two central park areas awaiting final completion. The master plan has been progressively updated to meet contemporary environmental, sustainability, and urban standards.

Low-Density Growth and Vacation Rental Restrictions

Designed to move away from mass-tourism density, El Mojón emphasizes balanced growth combining premium residential housing and hotel developments alongside expansive public green corridors.

Importantly, local authorities have confirmed that holiday home rentals (viviendas vacacionales) will be strictly prohibited within the new El Mojón sector, protecting its residential character.

Road Infrastructure and Economic Impact

The master plan incorporates major transport upgrades aimed at alleviating congestion in and out of Los Cristianos, including the long-discussed partial underground tunnel for Avenida Chayofita, managed in coordination with the Tenerife Cabildo and Canary Islands Government.

With close to €1 billion in total planned investment, the development is expected to generate thousands of local jobs and revitalize the urban structure of the southern region.
