Partial Solar Eclipse to Grace Canary Islands Skies on 12th August: Where to Get Free Certified Glasses

CANARY ISLANDS – Stargazers across the Canary Islands are preparing for an extraordinary astronomical show on 12th August, as a partial solar eclipse will see around 70% of the Sun covered by the Moon. To ensure the public can enjoy the event safely, Tenerife’s Museum of Science and the Cosmos is handing out free certified solar viewing glasses while stocks last.

The initiative is part of the nationwide safety campaign "A Unique View. Protect It" , organized by Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities in partnership with ONCE and the Association of Science and Technology Museums and Centres.

A Prime Astronomical Event in the Canary Sky

While mainland Spain will experience a total solar eclipse in several regions, the Canary Islands will witness a deep partial eclipse. Despite not reaching totality, astronomers describe it as one of the most impressive solar phenomena visible from the archipelago in recent years.

The eclipse will begin at 7:57 PM local time and continue until sunset. Observers are advised to select viewing spots with an unobstructed view of the western horizon, as mountains and steep valleys could block the setting Sun early, particularly on the eastern slopes of the larger islands.

Crucial Eye Protection for Safe Viewing

Astrophysicists are strongly warning against looking directly at the Sun without approved filters. Oswaldo González Sánchez, from the Museum of Science and the Cosmos, emphasized that homemade tricks like smoked glass, X-ray films, or dark sunglasses do not block dangerous radiation and can cause permanent retinal damage.

This event kicks off an unprecedented trilogy of major solar eclipses visible across Spain between 2026 and 2028. Furthermore, skywatchers in the Canaries will also be treated to a partial lunar eclipse just two weeks later during the August full moon.
