International Flight Prices Drop by Over 10% in July, Providing Relief for Canary Islands Travel

CANARY ISLANDS – International travel and island connections saw significant cost relief in the middle of the summer season. Countering the broader rise in the overall cost of living, international airfares dropped sharply by 10.2% in July , marking one of the month’s most significant price reductions.

This drop in flight costs was accompanied by a 9.9% decrease in sea travel and ferry fares , offering a welcome boost for inter-island journeys and for international visitors traveling to and from the Canary Islands.

Economic Context: Fuel and Energy Increases

Cheaper airfares came despite broader inflationary pressure across Spain, where annual inflation reached 3.6% in July (up from 3.2% in June). The rise was primarily driven by fuel costs—with diesel up 15.7% year-on-year and petrol up 7.3%—as well as domestic electricity (+8.4%) and natural gas (+4.1%).

To help ease transport costs, the Spanish Government announced it will increase its diesel discount to 20 cents per litre starting in September, while keeping the petrol subsidy at five cents per litre.

Grocery and Hospitality Price Trends

Food inflation continued to slow, with grocery prices rising 1.6% overall—the lowest annual increase since 2021. Despite the general slowdown, certain food items saw notable price swings:

  • Highest increases: Fresh berries (+17.2%), citrus fruit (+15.5%), eggs (+13.4%), and beef (+9.9%).
  • Biggest drops: Tropical fruit, dates, and figs (-15.4%) and other fresh fruits (-14.8%).

Meanwhile, prices across hotels, cafés, and restaurants rose by 9.9% compared to the previous year due to high summer demand.

Overall, the double-digit fall in international flight ticket prices will help offset daily living expenses for travelers booking stays in holiday apartments in los cristianos and other popular destinations across southern Tenerife.
