CANARY ISLANDS – The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow weather warnings covering the east, south, and west of Tenerife and Gran Canaria due to adverse coastal conditions and strong winds. This unsettled spell marks the start of September, bringing a surge in temperatures along with Saharan dust (calima).

Gale-Force Winds and Hazardous Coastal Conditions

The alerts address northeast winds reaching between 50 and 61 km/h (Force 7), with peak gusts concentrated around the channel separating Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Sea conditions are forecast to range from rough to very rough, particularly along southeastern coastlines. Beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts are advised to exercise caution near the shoreline.

Temperatures Rising Above 35°C with Hazy Skies

The rough coastal spell arrives alongside a warmer air mass pushing across the Archipelago. Temperatures are set to rise noticeably, potentially exceeding 35°C in mid-altitude and inland areas of Gran Canaria, accompanied by warm tropical nights across the islands.

The incoming heat brings airborne Saharan dust (calima), resulting in hazy conditions and reduced atmospheric visibility. Despite the warm and dry air mass, forecasters note that localized scattered showers remain possible in higher altitudes.
