Masca Residents Protest Road Closures Warning "If the Road Closes, the Village Dies"

TENERIFE – Residents and business owners in Masca, one of Tenerife's most famous natural attractions, are protesting against proposed restrictions on private vehicles. They warn that limiting access to the iconic mountain hamlet in Buenavista del Norte could spell economic disaster for those who live and work in the valley.

Protest banners now hang across the hamlet following a ten-day closure of the narrow TF-436 access road during August. Although the Tenerife Cabildo implemented the temporary measure to ensure emergency vehicle access during extreme wildfire hazards, locals fear these closures could become permanent or routine.

Economic Losses Threaten Local Businesses

Despite a permanent population of under 100 people, Masca is Tenerife's second most visited natural destination after Mount Teide. Local restaurants, cafes, and shops report a sharp drop in trade during the August restrictions, warning that the community cannot survive repeated access cuts.

Javier Díaz, secretary of the local residents' association, insists the core issue is not the tourists themselves, but outdated infrastructure. Residents are demanding road upgrades, including more passing places, reinforced slopes, and traffic lights on tight bends to accommodate modern vehicle sizes.

Authorities Rule Out Permanent Closure

Buenavista del Norte Mayor Eva García stressed that "the plan is not to close Masca, but to manage the tourist flow safely." Key proposals include building a park-and-ride facility in El Palmar served by public shuttle buses and restricting oversized coaches on the winding mountain route.
