Teide Traffic Restrictions for Perseids and Solar Eclipse: Private Cars Banned Nightly on August 12 and 13

TENERIFE – Anyone planning to travel to Mount Teide National Park to watch the Perseid meteor shower must take note of major traffic restrictions. The Tenerife Cabildo has announced a special traffic plan that bans all private vehicles from entering the park during the evenings and nights of Wednesday August 12th and Thursday August 13th.

The measures coincide with a unique astronomical double event, as the peak of the Perseids aligns with Wednesday's solar eclipse. To prevent severe gridlock and ensure emergency vehicles maintain access, private cars will be restricted between 5:00 PM and 5:00 AM on both nights.

Checkpoints and Operational Hours

Access control points will be set up on all four main arterial roads leading up into Teide National Park:

• TF-21 from La Orotava
• TF-24 from La Esperanza
• TF-38 from Chío
• TF-21 from Vilaflor

Advance information booths will also operate in Chío, La Esperanza, La Orotava, and Arafo to alert drivers before they reach the main checkpoints.

Permitted Vehicles and TITSA Special Bus Service

The National Park itself is not entirely closed. Exemptions apply to public transport, licensed tour buses, emergency services, park staff, and guests staying at accredited accommodations within the park.

To accommodate stargazers, local bus operator TITSA will run dedicated shuttle services from La Orotava, La Esperanza, and Vilaflor between 7:30 PM and 2:30 AM on both nights.

Visitors taking a break in holiday apartments in los cristianos or other southern coastal resorts are strongly advised to leave their private vehicles behind, check TITSA timetables in advance, and rely on organized public transport to enjoy the celestial show safely.
