Arona Town Hall Proposes New Parking Solutions to Tackle Shortage in Los Cristianos
LOS CRISTIANOS (TENERIFE) – Arona Town Hall is drawing up a series of proposals to significantly increase parking capacity in Los Cristianos, aiming to resolve the long-standing shortage of spaces in one of Tenerife's busiest tourist resorts. The planned projects focus on key areas including the port, the town centre, and the popular beachfront, where demand for parking regularly exceeds supply, particularly during peak tourist periods.
The largest and most debated proposal is a three-storey car park with more than 800 spaces planned for the current parking lot next to the Los Cristianos Port. Promoted by Spain's State Ports Authority (Puertos del Estado), the project has already sparked significant controversy. Both local residents and members of Arona's governing administration have expressed concerns over its visual impact, leading to recent public demonstrations. The council has stated it would prefer either a surface-level expansion or an underground facility to minimize the impact on the scenic seafront.
As accessibility and infrastructure remain top priorities for the municipality, these developments are highly relevant for the local tourism sector. Finding convenient parking is a key factor for independent travelers who rent vehicles to explore the island, which is why availability near premium holiday apartments in los cristianos continues to be a major selling point for visitors looking for a seamless, stress-free holiday experience.
Several other parking schemes are also under consideration across the town. These include a proposed underground car park beneath Avenida Habana—one of the town's busiest commercial roads serving Las Vistas Beach and El Camisón—as well as new facilities near the port's main roundabout. Additionally, plans remain in place to resolve a long-standing contract to build a 500-space car park near the Antonio Domínguez Stadium and Hospiten Sur. Arona Council, which recently approved a change in the operator managing the current 100-space underground facility, emphasizes that it is assessing all options to improve accessibility while balancing the needs of residents, businesses, and holidaymakers.
